PTFE packing applications & selection

PTFE braided packing is used to seal stuffing boxes on compatible pumps, valves and process equipment. Select it by medium and concentration, pressure, temperature, shaft motion and speed, and stuffing-box dimensions. Pure PTFE, graphite-filled and aramid combinations address different duties; none should be selected from temperature alone.

Pump shafts and rotating equipment

Rotating shafts generate frictional heat. Review shaft speed, surface condition, lubrication or flush arrangements and the manufacturer's installation procedure. Some packing systems require controlled leakage for cooling; confirm the permitted leakage rather than assuming a zero-leak seal.

Valve stems and static duty

Valve-stem packing must suit stem movement, pressure cycling, temperature and the process medium. Valve requirements are not interchangeable with pump-shaft requirements. Confirm gland geometry, stem finish and any emissions or inspection requirements.

Pure PTFE and soft packing

Pure PTFE is a starting point when chemical compatibility and purity matter. Soft-packing construction can help conformability, but pressure, extrusion risk and motion must be reviewed for the specific product. Confirm any lubricant or impregnation for the medium.

Graphite-filled PTFE

Graphite-filled PTFE can improve heat transfer and suit selected dynamic duties. Fillers and impregnation change the material system, so review chemical compatibility and purity requirements. Do not apply virgin PTFE properties to every filled packing.

Aramid and combination packing

Aramid-reinforced and graphite/PTFE/aramid constructions may be considered for wear, extrusion resistance and more demanding mechanical duty. They require a review of shaft wear, medium, speed and installation conditions. Reinforcement is not a universal upgrade for every process.

Sizing and quotation checklist

Provide shaft or stem diameter, stuffing-box bore and depth, packing cross-section, ring count, quantity, medium, concentration, pressure, temperature, rotational or reciprocating speed and flush conditions. Confirm the selected product's limits and installation requirements before purchase.

Common buyer questions

Can the same PTFE packing be used in a pump and a valve?

Not automatically. Rotating pumps and valve stems differ in frictional heat, movement and sealing conditions. Confirm the packing's suitability for the actual equipment and operating duty.

How do I choose packing size?

Supply the shaft or stem diameter and stuffing-box bore and depth, or a drawing. Cross-section, ring count and fit must be confirmed for the equipment.

Is all PTFE packing rated to +260°C?

No. General virgin PTFE temperature data does not establish a finished packing's rating. Fibres, fillers, lubricants, pressure and speed can change its usable service limits.
